If you are looking for an accommodation in Japan, you will have quite a broad selection of possible places.

Some of these are a little bit on the crazy side, some are barely bigger than you yourself.

There is quite a big pool of possibilities to choose from.

I have compiled a List for you with Accommodations and their average overnight stay costs.

First you have the choice from Japanese traditional Style Accommodations:

Minshuku: 3000 to 10000 Yen per Person

These are family run traditional Hotels, you will have your own Room to sleep in, but usually meals are shared with the Family and other Guests.

Recommended place for good Japaneses Food, the Cultural Experience and Warmth of a Family.

Minpaku: 2500 to 9000 Yen per Person

You could also call this Homestay, as this is usually a Family renting out one or two Rooms in their House for Guests to stay in.You get all the Comfort and Warmth of living with a Family and they will try to take care of you,

as much as you permit it that is.

I recommend these for people traveling alone in Japan and who want a closer look into the daily live of a the Japanese People.

Ryokan: 4000 to 40000 Yen per Person

Japanese style Rooms in a traditional Japanese Inn is what you are looking for? This is it, Ryokan have existed in Japan for a very long time in this form, some of the very old ones are nearly 1000 Years in operation.

You rent the Room, most times more like a Multi-Room Apartment, but traditional Japanese Style.

There will usually be a wide range of Services available for you in your Room, from a full Course of Japanese Dinner to Body Massage and other services for Entertainment.

Then there are the more Western Style Hotels:

Standard Hotels: 4000 to 15000 Yen per Person

Just normal Hotels, that don't really fall into any special category, just the Type you know from abroad, like the big Hotel Chains Hilton or Hyatt.

Business Hotel: 3500 to 10000 Yen per Person

On average it is just one Room, with no real Service and Rooms just barely bigger than your Bed.

Hostels and Dormitories: 1500 to 5000 Yen per Person

There is a decent number of Hostels and Dormitories in Japan, most are operated by Japan Youth Hostel, which is a Member of the International Youth Hostel Federation.

For low Budget and cheap meals, this would be your best choice and leaves you with more Money to experience Japan.

And then there are the Little "different" Style Lodgings:

Yeah this is where the Fun starts, if you come to Japan, you have to try some of these!

Capsule Hotel: 2000 to 4000 Yen per Person

Blog About Japan Capsule Hotel

Every tried to imagine sleeping in a Coffin?

Well, this comes pretty close. It is like the name states literally just a Capsule, but at least one with TV and Air Condition. The standard Capsule is a 1.2 m wide Unit made of Fiberglass, 2m long and 1 m high. All Capsule Hotels are Gender Segregated, meaning either for only Men or with different Floors for Men and Women. So if you are traveling with your Friends or Family, you won't be able to stay together. Toilets and Shower Rooms are shared between all Customers of each Floor or Section.

But nonetheless, give it a try, in the end it's all about the Experience, isn't it?!

Love Hotel: 3000 to 20000 Yen Per Room

Wanna make Love like the Batman?

Blog About Japan Love Hotel Batman Theme

Like the name states, these are all about making out and getting a Room for that, but nonetheless you can use these Hotels for your Entertainment and a good night of Sleep. You will have the choice from themed Rooms to Jacuzzi equipped ones, Fetish Rooms and much more. Anything you can imagine, there is a Room for that. Usually these have a Room Service Menu as well as Vending Machines with Adult Toys.

My wife and I like to go for a Drive from time to time, and usually Love Hotels are our choice for gorgeous Rooms with a very reasonable Pricing. As long as you travel with your Partner, it will be cheaper to go to a Love Hotel at night, than rent a Room in a normal or Business Hotel, as Prices here are calculated per time you stay and per Room, not per Person.

Manga or Net Cafe: 800 to 3000 Yen per Person

This is a good alternative for extremely low cost and sleeping in a Chair. Like the name suggests its an Internet Cafe or Manga one with your own Cubicle to read, sleep and surf the Internet. No Bed, mostly just a comfy Chair.

And last but not least,

Shukubo or Temple Lodgings: starting at roughly 3000 Yen per Person

Here you can get the full Japanese Religious Experience, sadly only available at a few Temple throughout Japan. You will usually be able to join the Morning Prayer and the Food will be Vegetarian.

To stay at one of these, i recommend to go to the nearest Temple and ask a Monk.

Even if you will not be able to stay at their Temple, they usually know where it is possible in your City.

If you have any Questions or would like to share your Experience, please comment below or send it to me personally here.
